Criminal Law Update Seminar

The subjects in this Temple Chambers Summer Seminar are:

The Magistrates' Court Sentencing Guidelines - David Webster

The Mental Health Act 2007 - The impact on criminal procedure in the Crown and Magistrates Courts - Stephen Jeary

Changes to the "Dangerousness Provisions" brought about by the implementation of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 - Claire Pickthall


 

David Webster will use his experience as a Deputy District Judge to explain the content and consider the effect of the guidelines, including the approach of the court, mitigation, reduction for guilty plea, community orders and fines.

Stephen Jeary will be outlining the changes which will come into force in October 2008 throught the Mental Health Act 2007. He will look at the definition of mental disorder, approved clinicians and responsible clinicians, and most importantly the courts' powers under the Act.

Claire Pickthall will be looking at the most recent legislation to refine those sections of the Criminal Justice Act 2003 which provide for dangerous offenders.
