Criminal Law practitioner, specialising in defending. Head of Chambers.

Hilary Roberts has been a specialist Criminal Law practitioner for the last twenty years. Whilst primarily defending, Hilary is also a Grade 4 prosecutor.
Hilary Roberts was Head of Chambers at Newport Chambers before the merger with 32 Park Place to form Temple Chambers in 1999.

Attorney-General's Reference (No. 152 of 2002) [2003] EWCA Crim 996; [2003] 2 Cr App R 18 ; [2004] 1 Cr App R (S) 1: sentencing guidelines for the offence of causing death by dangerous driving and careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs.
R v L; R v J (Deferred Sentence) [1999] Crim LR 236: an order deferring sentence amounts can be appealed or referred to the Court of Appeal by the Attorney-General.
R v Desmond [1999] Crim LR 313: the suggestion that a witness was lying, depending on the circumstances, might be no more than to emphasise an imputation which the defence could not avoid making if the case was to be put at all.
R v Mattey; R v Queeley The Times, October 13, 1994: admission of witness statements by persons who are overseas whose attendance at trial it is not reasonably practicable to secure.
